The ideal nursery theme ~ By Mini Swami

Decorating is fun and is even more fun when you are given a free rein. Taking advantage of the fact that a newborn baby is at our mercy and has absolutely no say in the matter, we can really unleash our creativity and have a real blast in choosing a particular theme for the nursery.

While functionality is a big question, parents really cannot resist putting their ideas to test. There are in fact many themes to choose from, and if you do not mind redecorating when the child is older, just go ahead and enjoy yourself.

A mixture of bright and bland can do wonders to any room. Highlight the important features of the nursery like the wall, ceiling and the cushions and linens and adorn them using a bright color scheme and paint the furniture using white or light shades. The contrast can be stunning and you will feel wonderful to just sit in the room. It really enlivens you and your spirits.

However if you are looking for quiet and peace, then choose colors which soothe you and the baby. Blue sky with white clouds for the ceiling, matching cushions and linens with white and blue nursery furniture can prove to be a god send when you are really really exhausted. You can soak in the color and be lulled by the quiet all around you. Soothing colors can be good for the baby too, for looking up at the clouds and sky during day makes it daydream about pleasant things. A good atmosphere can do a world of wonder.

Underwater baby nursery themes in soothing colors are also very popular. Seahorses, goldfish, starfish, mermaids and mermen on the walls can create an aquatic effect, which could lull the baby to sleep. Do not overdo the theme or the effect is nullified. Water and water creatures with their gliding motions always have a soporific effect. Cowboys and cowgirls are all time favorites. Horses can liven up any room and painting them on walls and furniture can give a stimulating effect, but do be careful with such themes. After all, the entire nursery is meant to be a place for rest and quiet. Barnyard themes, animal themes, wood themes, bird themes, the list is just endless. Mix and match should be your policy.

Get as creative as you want. Use stripes, stencils and story book themes to transform the walls and room into a fairy story, but remember, too much of it can make you feel sick. With so many themes available one can get as imaginative as one wants, but the golden rule is the baby will not be a baby for very long.

Remember color is the catalyst that triggers emotions. If you want to feel good and relaxed, go in for neutrals or soft pastels, but if you want to feel vibrant use bright colors and graphics. You can lend an air of sophistication by using beautiful fabrics on beds, cribs and window seats. Rich curtains can add to the aura.  Sponge painting, rag rolling and stenciling adds design and novelty. However, some primary colors are a must. Red, yellow and blue are tried and tested colors that have contributed greatly to the cognitive development of babies. So use colors and themes judiciously.
