stained glass restoration

The process of Stained glass restoration is a painstaking process. In fact it is far easier to create a new piece of glass artwork, rather than restore what is actually there. Basically, stained glass needs periodic restoration as glass in general has a lifespan, which ranges usually upto a hundred years. Beyond that its wear and tear usually begins. In the case of normal glass windows or doors, we just remove the entire sheet of glass and replace it. But, the process is obviously different for stained glass.

During the process of restoring stained glass, we are required to restore those pieces of colored glass that are damaged for some reason or the other. The pieces may have chipped off or the paint may have gone dull. You may notice that even a single small defected portion can mar the entire piece of art.

If the stained glass is not restored in time then it may go through what is known as irreparable damage. This happens in case of inadequate availability of the glass pieces that need to be repaired. In this case the restorer is required to look out for similar pieces that could fit in. However, the original finish would be lost in the bargain, which is the case of many antique stained glass works.

Stained glass windows may need partial or complete restoration. In the case of partial restoration the windows need not be removed completely and can be worked on while it is in its original position. On the other hand complete restoration requires one to remove framed the windows and work on the damaged portions.
