stained glass tools

While many people have adopted stained glass artwork as a hobby, yet some have converted this into a business. All in all it is about being artistic, patient and having an inclination towards recreating life onto glass. Usually people specializing in this form of art first study the history of stained glass. You may attend a class to learn the process, or then even read and learn on your own. Irrespective, the first step to this art form is making an inventory of the stained glass tools you require and how to use these tools to create a piece of art on glass.

The first tool is a thick sheet of glass on which you wish to do stained glass work. This maybe of any size depending on what you wish to create. It maybe a window, door, wall hanging, a shelf or even a sun-catcher. Your next tool is the pattern, which is also your first step in stained glass artwork. The pattern you select maybe something originally created by you, or traced from a book or magazine. This has to be then traced on the glass. So what you do require is tracing paper and a pen that writes on glass. It is ideally recommended to keep a copy of your pattern, in case you intend replicating the same.

After this comes the actually glass work for which you require glass pieces, a glass cutter, and etching cream if available, glass paints, a couple of paint brushes of varying thickness, lead that comes specially for stain glass, which is termed as lead came, a solder and a piece of cloth.

One can also opt for iron came. However lead is more preferred because of the finish it gives. The lines, and gentle curves are far more precise with lead than any other came. To explain the use of lead came, it functions as the outline of the pattern, within which the paint is put and the glass is stuck.

It is advised that before you start a stained glass project you must have all the tools in place. Another fact is that the quality of tools varies, depending on the company and the pricing. For a good piece of art, it is always advisable to buy the best in the market. Finally, there is one more tool, which is a good handbook on how to do stained glass for the first timers.  ~ author Karishma Bajaj
