Eminent musical prodigies produced in this land include the likes of Manos Hatzidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Rita Abatzi, George Dalaras, Rosa Eskenazi, George Theodorakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Tilak and Markos Vamvakaris to name a few. Most popular from of music in Greece is Rembetika. It’s basically an urban music at the core of which lies touching chronicling of individual and societal tribulations.
Quite similar to American gangsta rap, Rembetika reflects feeling of death, drugs addiction, failed love and plight of immigrants. Common instruments include, bouzoukis (long-necked lutes), ouzo-soaked, plate-smashing spins of Zorba and stringed lyra etc. Greek music has also been enriched by numerous Diaspora groups residing in this historical land.
