In India there are
certain villages that make a living out of pottery. They create clay
sculptures that are not only sold in the domestic market, but are also
exported abroad. It is one of the major handicraft industries of the
country. As a matter of fact a section of Asia’s largest slum, Dharavi,
is dedicated wholly to the pottery industry. The clay sculptors not only mold pots of all shapes and sizes, but also statues and other showpieces and wall hangings. They first prepare the clay out of mud and other elements and then make the mold. Once the mold is prepared, it is put into a special oven. After the baking process nothing can be done to modify the clay sculpture in terms of the shape and size. The sculptors specialize in any one form of clay art. Some may concentrate on just pots and other household products such as the dining set. Others concentrate on handicraft clay sculptures. This is basically creating figurines that represent what is Indian such as dolls, animals, candle holders, etc. And yet there are others who dedicate themselves to sculpturing life like statues of well-known people. Apart from this being a recognized handicraft industry, many people indulge in the hobby of clay sculpturing. They probably attend classes or learn from books. Even a normal cooking oven would help bake a homemade sculpture of clay. All you need is the raw products, a design to mold and other material such as paint, beads, etc to decorate whatever object you intend making. In fact one of the latest fashion trends is that of clay jewelry. . ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
