frizzy hair

Some people take pride in the volume and bounce of their hair while others seem to look like they have been electrocuted most of the time. To put the predicament of the latter bunch in simpler terms, it could be called ‘frizzy hair’.

The two essential factors which hair lacks in order to gain that not so appealing, frizzy, broom-like appearance are moisture and natural oils. The credit for the superior quality of Indian hair can thus, be largely attributed to the geographical location of our country in the tropical region of high humidity.

To control frizzy hair, it is important to use the correct shampoo and conditioner, preferably one recommended by your hair stylist after he or she has studied you hair type. There is a common misconception that keeping hair continuously oiled makes it less dry, brittle and frizzy. When we oil our hair we are coating it with a layer which - like a film of oil on a water body - definitely prevents loss of moisture but also its absorption from the atmosphere.

Hence, the concept of oil producing good results for frizzy hair is very subjective depending on ones hair type, the amount of natural oils produced by ones scalp, the moisture content of ones hair, the extent of damage and the amount of time oil is allowed to remain in hair.

‘Porosity’, is the amount of moisture retained by hair or the retentive ability of hair for water. Porosity is inversely proportional to ‘frizziness’ and the extent of damage to the cuticle-directly proportional to porosity.  ~ Author Mansi Ghuwalewala.
