industry here, these hi-profile artisans have carved a niche for
themselves and merged as the top fashion designers today. Most of them
are highly qualified in terms of fashion from Indian / International
fashion institutes and through their hard work have managed to build an
inroad for themselves in the world of fashion. |
Here’s a brief look at
some of their profiles.
Famous Indian Fashion
designers
Ritu Kumar
She started out small and long ago with a small group of block print
artisans in the hinterlands of Kolkata. She redefined the meaning of
fashion and began when this field was nascent. With an expertise in art
history and museology she has magically fused the realms of modern with
the contemporary and is popular for her traditional designs used in
classic manner. Today she has about 12 of her own retail boutiques with
a high range of silk, cotton and leather designs under the sub-brand
LABEL.
Aki Narula
One of the premier fashion designers, he is a proud winner of the
Damania Fashion Designer Award. His collections are available in most
designer shops including Ensemble, Melange, Efolio etc. One f his USPs
is his extreme comfort levels in designing for both men as well as
women.
Hemant Trivedi
Equipped with a qualification from the Australian Technical Institute of
Fashion Design, Hemant Trivedi today has made a name for himself through
the beauty pageants for whose contenders he has designed the dresses. He
has achieved immense success as the likes of Aishwarya Rai and Diana
Hayden have donned his designs during their golden days
Manish Malhotra
The modern Bollywood actresses and models have transformed themselves
into Cinderellas as the doyen of contemporary fashion, Manish Malhotra
has literally evolved the flashy and gaudy filmily dressed actors and
actresses into suave and hot-looking chicks. Awarded with a Filmfare in
costume designing, he has surely made a mark for himself in the glitzy
fashion capital.
These are a few of the famous fashion designers who have worked their
way to the top. Most of them also have their own designer labels and
exclusive boutiques such as Manish Arora, Ritu Beri, Salim Asgarally,
Anita Dongre, JJ Vallaya’s ‘LIFE’ etc. Many of them design for local,
national and international retail brands like Roopam, Harrods etc.

To become a famous fashion designer, one does not necessarily need to be
‘well-connected’ as they say. With sheer hard work, talent, a great
aesthetic sense, ability to sense fashion and new trends etc. are more
than enough to make a mark in the industry despite competition.
Today
there are several fashion shows on both national and international
levels organised by different fashion houses or authorities like Fashion
design Council that render a platform to aspiring fashion professionals.

The IMG led Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week and the
Lakme Fashion Show are some of ‘the’ properties to be in if one needs to
be showcased and get there.
All in all, fashion designing has got an impetus and
the need for famous fashion designers has expanded.
